Yarra Valley Accommodation > Pinot Noir
Kiltynane Estate – Pinot Noir
Site Elevation is 110m above sea level on the northern Yarra Valley
slopes. Slope of 1:10 to the south and west. Soil is ancient devonian
weathered grey loam over yellow/orange clay. Rainfall 750mm. Ripening
season: Average day temp approx 26 deg. Average night temp. approx
10 deg.
Viticulture
The 5 year old vines are close planted 1 x 2m. Seven clones are
grown. Biodynamic practices are followed to enhance soil life
and negate the need for artificial fertilizers. Chemical inputs
are avoided totally where possible. Irrigation avoided. Vines
are trellised VSP unilaterally to yield 1 to 1.5kg per vine.
Harvest
Handpicked four clones mid March in cool temperature. Analysis
of 12.8 baume, 3.2 PH.
Winemaking
This Pinot Noir was destemmed, keeping 10% whole bunches. Fermentation
took five days with gentle hand plunging. Secondary fermentation
followed and the wine was then pressed into one new French oak
barrique for maturation. Prior to bottling, the wine was fined
with egg white to clean it prior to bottling without filtration.
Bottling
Bottled September 2004 without filtration. Final analysis of
3.4 ph, 12.8 % alcohol and < 0.25gm/l sugar. Production of
30 dozen only.
Tasting Notes
Colour is dark plum with some garnet in the depth and violet
aura. Great density is evident in the colour, with clean brightness
in the glass. Long viscous tears attest the minimal vine yields.
Aromas of rich black cherry fruit, hint of rhubarb, spice and
funghi. A complex and balanced wine with soft tannins and good
length.
Cellaring Optimum drinking from 2005 – 2007.
