Organic Biodynamic Wine
2006 Kiltynane Estate “Preliminaire” -
Blanc De Noir
Site Elevation is 110m above sea level on the northern Yarra Valley
slopes. Slope of 1:10 to the south and west. Soil is ancient devonian
weathered grey loam over yellow/orange clay. Rainfall 750mm. Ripening
season: Average day temp approx 26 deg. Average night temp. approx
10 deg.
Viticulture
The 8 year old vines are close planted 1 x 2m. Seven clones are
grown. Biodynamic Organic practices are followed to enhance soil life
and negate the need for artificial fertilizers. Chemical inputs
are avoided totally where possible. Irrigation avoided. Vines
are trellised VSP unilaterally to yield 1 to 1.5kg per vine. The Blanc de Noir in 2007 was made from D5V12 and 115 clones of Pinot Noir.
Harvest
Handpicked mid February in cool temperature. Analysis of
12.4 baume, 3.2 PH.
Winemaking
Inspired by my friend Frederic Blanck, the grapes were gently whole
bunch pressed into a range of French Oak for fermentation in barrel.
Both primary and MLF were wild. The wine matured on lees in barrel
for 12 months to December 2007 without any intervention, before
racking and preparation for bottling.
Bottling
Bottled February 2008, sterile filtered, analysis of 3.2 ph, 6.0gm/l acid, 12.4% alcohol and < 0.25/l residual sugar. Production of 1000 litres or 110 cases.
Tasting Notes
Colour is light gold/straw. Complex, mealy, integrated. Clean, dry, balanced, not fruit driven yet but fruit will evolve with cellaring. Even flavour, excellent structure. Complex aromas develop in the glass – soft citrus fruit, light spice, some anise and underlying funghi and earthiness. Fantastic length and mid palate viscosity. Dry elegant oak tannins on finish with fine acid. This wine has been allowed to show layers and texture of intriguing complexity to excite the adventurous wine lover.
Cellaring: Optimum drinking to 2014
