Kiltynane Estate Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2006, $45. The words “from sky to earth to vine to bottle” appear somewhat hippyish, but this is fabulous stuff which probably won’t appeal to the purists but stuff them, just means more for us. 9.2/10.

Kiltynane Estate Pinot Noir 2006
category: tasting note date:29/04/2008
Through fastidious biodynamic and organic viticulture plus some artful cellar management, Kate Kirkhope has created a substantial, richly flavoured and stylish pinot noir from her Yarra Valley vineyard. It’s scented with vibrant fruit, heady floral aromas with a hint of sous-bois, cinnamon and sweet, fine-grained French oak. Its juicy, mouthfilling flavours of black and red cherries, raspberries have an appealing freshness but slightly sour edges which, with some genuinely refreshing acidity, provide a stamp of tightness and focus. An assertive wine that could be cellared with plenty of confidence, it’s succulent and slightly viscous, but is underpinned by a firm, but fine-grained chassis of genuinely ripe tannin. Finely balanced, it finishes with a long, persistent core of ripe cherry and berry flavour with just a suggestion of dried herbs. Frankly, it’s a steal at the price. (Yarra Valley, $40 ex cellar, 18.6/95, drink 2011-2014)

Kiltynane Estate Pinot Noir 2006
"Donlevy Fitzpatrick championed pinot long before it was fashionable to do so, and this Yarra Valey wine made by Kate Kirkhope from young vines and a biodynamic vineyard is an absolute beauty. Medium - bodied and with dark - cherry fruit and a little undergrowth, this beautifully crafted wine is velvety and persistent."
